Why I came to UAB?
Who would not want to be a part of the UAB experience? Upon graduating from pharmacy school, I knew that retail was not the place for me. Following my residency at UAB, I really did not want to leave Birmingham. I wanted to continue to gain a wonderful clinical relationship with the doctors and nurses that I came in contact with. Coming to UAB afforded me the opportunity to take care of patients and continue to become more knowledgeable in the various incidents that I would face.
One thing I would tell a pharmacist interested in UAB
If you want to make an impact in the care of patients, the opportunities to do so at UAB are endless.
Tell about one event while working at UAB that has changed you
It is difficult for me to pinpoint one event, because everyday offers a task that makes you strive for excellence, strive for improvement. Everyday I am faced with challenges that open the door for change-change to become a better pharmacist-change to be a better servant, a better humanitarian.
What are some characteristics of a UAB Pharmacist?
A UAB pharmacist is hardworking, dedicated, humble, and compassionate.
What has surprised you the most about the support you've received as a Pharmacist?
One thing that makes me proud of the job that I do is when a physician or nurse says, "Thank you for the work you do." At UAB, there are no big I's and little U's. We are a team working together for the good of the patient. Teamwork is the key to acceleration.
How would you describe a typical day as a UAB Pharmacist?
So long to the days when pharmacists only dispensed medications. Today the pharmacists have daily one-on-one contact with patients helping to manage their various disease states. We are an information source for our physicians and nurses. We play a vital role in dosing patient's medications and monitoring laboratory data to make the necessary adjustments in the patient's care. Overall, the daily role of the pharmacist is to apply knowledge achieved through studies and to interpret and develop plans to assist in the improvement of a patient's quality of life.
